Building a 120V AC Power Supply for 3V DC Output

Author: ZYG Power Module Time: 2023-4-19

Introduction:

In this tutorial, we will learn how to build a 120V AC power supply that outputs 3V DC. This is a simple project that can be completed by anyone with basic knowledge of electronics. The power supply can be used to power small electronic projects, such as LED lights or small motors. Let\’s get started!

Materials Required:

– 120V AC power source

– Transformer (120V AC to 3V AC)

– Bridge rectifier (1N4007)

– Capacitor (1000uF, 16V)

– Voltage regulator (LM7805)

– Heat sink

– Resistor (220 ohm)

– LED

– Breadboard

– Jumper wires

Instructions:

Step 1: Connect the Transformer

Connect the primary side of the transformer to the 120V AC power source. The secondary side of the transformer should be connected to the bridge rectifier.

Step 2: Connect the Bridge Rectifier

Connect the positive and negative terminals of the bridge rectifier to the output terminals of the transformer. The bridge rectifier will convert the 3V AC output of the transformer to a pulsating DC output.

Step 3: Connect the Capacitor

Connect the positive terminal of the capacitor to the positive output of the bridge rectifier. The negative terminal of the capacitor should be connected to the ground.

Step 4: Connect the Voltage Regulator

Connect the output of the capacitor to the input of the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator is used to regulate the voltage and provide a stable 3V DC output. The voltage regulator should be mounted on a heat sink to dissipate heat.

Step 5: Connect the Resistor and LED

Connect the resistor to the output of the voltage regulator. The LED should be connected in series with the resistor. The resistor is used to limit the current flowing through the LED.

Step 6: Test the Power Supply

Connect the power supply to a load, such as an LED or small motor, to test the output voltage. The output voltage should be 3V DC.

Conclusion:

In this tutorial, we have learned how to build a simple 120V AC power supply that outputs 3V DC. This power supply can be used to power small electronic projects and is a great starting point for those new to electronics. With some basic components, this power supply can be built in just a few minutes.
